He has developed and directed programs in Arizona and Florida for all levels and ages of player including; 10 and under, junior and high performance junior and adults. He was also a volunteer assistant coach for the men's team at UNC – Wilmington while the team achieved a season high ITA Division I ranking of #46. He has worked closely with adults of all levels from beginners to 4.5 NTRP rated players. PJ enjoys contributing to the development of adult players, whether it be teaching the fundamentals of the sport or seeing improved results for league players. Further, he believes that quality 10 and under programs that are fun, engaging and fundamental skill based are rewarding to young children as they develop as people and as they may choose to have a future as recreational, high-school or high level competitive players. As a player, PJ was ranked in the top 25 in the USTA national rankings in the 18 and under division, played on scholarship at the University of South Carolina and is currently a top 20 all-time Gamecock record holder in singles with 82 career singles wins. After college, PJ achieved an ATP world ranking and holds a MBA from the F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson College.
High Performance Juniors
PJ’s high performance junior programs in Arizona and Florida have included; 2-4 hour per day clinic (after school and full time programs), private lessons, tournament travel services and coaching, NCAA college recruiting assistance including networking and communication with college coaches and player video production.
As part of his coaching philosophy, PJ strives to connect with and get to know each individual player as a person and athlete. Coaching to the individual is important to player development as each person has a unique set of athletic and mental capabilities. As the fundamental base is being developed, the player should be further developed, tactically, strategically and mentally towards a style of play that most suits them as an individual.
He believes that success in junior tennis is never the product of one person’s efforts. It is a team effort among the player, parents and coach. Over the years, PJ is proud to have coached and contributed to 30 players achieving NCAA Division I scholarships including; UNC – Chapel Hill, Florida, Vanderbilt, ASU, Dartmouth, Minnesota, Arizona, Brown, Clemson, Indiana, Stony Brook, Marquette, St. John’s, Navy and Radford to name a few.
Further, several of PJ’s students have achieved top 10 national rankings, 3 players ranked inside the top 150 ITF international rankings and a few players achieving ATP and WTA rankings prior to beginning college.
As another point of coaching philosophy, PJ believes that a balance of tennis, schooling, family and life off the court is the key to long term success as a junior player, collegiate player and life after tennis. And, quality education in college is a great goal to have and tennis can be a great way to help the student-athlete achieve that goal.
